Hammerli Pistols 357

Well, I got good news today and I got bad news. I recently became the proud owner of a Hammerli CO2 Pistol. It looked to be in very good condition (90%+) and I decided I was going to shoot it.
My first problem was finding CO2 cartridges for it. Most of the cartridges in the US are 12 gram cylinders. The Hammerli takes 8 gram cylinders. I finally found the correct cartridges at a soda fountain supply on line.
Next I needed some decent pellets. Bigweatherby helped with that problem by sending me a couple of sites that sold competition quality pellets.
Then all I had to do was wait for the big brown truck.
Well, turns out it was the white, blue, and green truck, but it came. I had everything I needed, including a brand new target trap set up in my workshop.
I installed a new CO2 cartridge. I cocked the gun and when the pop up breech came up I inserted a .177 match pellet. I took a steady sight picture and squeezed the trigger.
The gun made a tiny, almost silent, 'pop' and all the CO2 came out around the trigger! I mean it just slowly leaked out. HHHHHHHIIIIIiiiiiiiiiiiiissssssssssss... Get the picture?
It was apparent I had seal problems as well as who knew what else. No problem, I am committed to this gun. My first air pistol project and I am not stopping until its finished.
I started calling air pistol rebuilding places around the country. I find out the gun was built from 1959 to 1970. The factory, with all available parts, burned to the ground in 1969. Are y'all starting to see where I'm going with this?
No one will touch the gun. I heard 'it's a fine gun and Olympic quality accurate but without parts, I can't even work on it. Try calling so and so'. I finally contact a man named Rudy Marent in Houston, Texas. He is 81 years old and was the head gun smith/armorer for Hammerli for nearly 50 years. He wrote most of their manuals and helped design and build the first CO2 guns made. He is also retired.
He asked me a bunch of questions. He said the gun was worth about $400 used in very good condition only because there were no parts available. He said I would probably spend nearly what it was worth to fix it. Was I still interested? Hell, yah!
Rudy told me he didn't have all the parts to rebuild the gun but he has a private machine shop and the knowledge to use it.
Long story short, the Hammerli is going out tomorrow to Houston, on its way to a new life. Rudy has promised to put the gun in like new condition and send it, including an original manual, back to me to start a new life.
He asked me how much I was willing to spend on the gun and I told him I wanted it like new. I said I was willing to put a few hundred dollars into the gun for the right result. He said he would return the gun when it was finished and there would be a bill in the box.
Now that I'm committed to this project, I can't wait to get it back.
I'll keep y'all updated as time goes by. I don't even know how long it will take. When I asked him he said it depended on how he felt when he woke up!
Just think, 2 weeks ago I had zero interest in air guns! I'll blame it on NGF!
Don
